Virtual Markawasi

Peru's Stone Forest

QTVR - 360º panoramas

Simple Version The Amphitheater The Healing Cross Sunset Ridge
Fullscreen & music The Amphitheater The Healing Cross Sunset Ridge
(close fullscreen page when done)

How these were made:

Ten vertical, overlapping photos were taken with a wide-angle lens in the field. These were handheld with level and overlap done by eye (and experience!). Photos were "stitched" together on a mac using either Realviz Stitcher and sometimes Photoshop CS3, with image work in Photoshop. The cylindrical projections were converted to cube faces using Cubicconverter, and graphics were added along with some edge cheating in Photoshop (eg. the whole top of the sky is fake, I'm sorry to say). The 6 cube faces are brought back to Cubicconverter for export to the QTVR movie in spherical projection, which I've found to be the best user environment. Fullscreen versions with music were assembled with Pleinpot. Quicktime required to view.

Zoomify - Detailed vistas

How these were made:

These images are panoramics, but don't extend 360º. The images are stitched from multiple full-frame wide-angle photos, stitched in Photoshop CS3 and exported with Zoomify. You can see the full resolution of these very detailed images by "zooming" in, and exploring with the mouse. These are generally over 2000 pixels high and 10,000 pixels wide. Flash required to view.

I want to find the time to put interactive images on a map to show their location, and the landmarks within their view. There are many figures visible, maybe you'll find some new ones, and places you'll have to physically visit to investigate!
I welcome your comments, corrections and suggestions on this work in progress.

Markawasi, the book!

The definitive book on the location is also by Kathy Doore; Markawasi: Peru's Inexplicable Stone Forest. Many of the photographs in the book are mine from our 2005 documentation project. (you can purchase it from the link on the right)

Markawasi, the movie!

The most exciting armchair introduction to this amazing site is from the documentary our 2005 trip was devoted to. Fulfilling the documentation begun in 1992 when I assisted Bill Cote in making time-lapse 16mm clips showing the shadows moving over these stone "sculptures". Finally, a full length movie and 2 dvd detailed set has been produced after a run on the documentary channel.

I'm proud to have contributed to this film, produced by my good friend and associate Bill Cote of BC Video. (you can purchase it from the link on the right)
